How To Hand Wash Clothes:
Wool and Delicate Care Items

About a year ago my washing machine broke down and I had to wait an entire month to get it fixed. I didn't like the idea of using our local laundromat because of the state of their old laundry equipment, so I opted to wash my clothes by hand. Looking back, it really wasn't as difficult as I first thought.

Step 1 - Prepare your washing area. If you already have a laundry sink in your laundry room, great! If not, you'll want to either use your bathtub, or use a washtub. Alternatively, you could also use your kitchen sink, although with a washboard the height isn't ideal. You can place a board over the bathtub and put the washtub on it so you don't have to bend over to scrub and wring out the clothes.

Gather your laundry products and laundry tools that you'll be using, like a plastic or metal washtub, laundry soap bar, eco-friendly laundry detergent, and a magnetic water conditioning device if you don't have a water softener installed in your home.

Step 2 - Fill the wash tub with a small amount of water (about 1/3 of the volume of the tub). It's not necessary to use a large amount of water. For hand-washing wool or delicate items, use cool water and a gentle laundry soap bar. For regular laundry, add the laundry detergent to the water. Use only half them amount of detergent you would normally use when washing with a washing machine. Next, lightly scrub the clothes on the washboard, one after the other and then also swish the clothes around in the wash water. Then take them out of the water and lightly wring them out. Pour out the dirty water.

Step 3 - Fill the wash tub with clean, cool water, again only 1/3 full. Place all the washed items back in the tub and swish them around a bit to remove the dirt. Then wring them out again. Flat-dry wool items. Hang dry regular items as usual, or dry them in the dryer.
